If you are wondering how to grow Exploring, increase revenue, support your staff with Exploring or Learning for Life responsibilities, or develop a district- or council-level Exploring or Learning for Life committee, we have some exciting news for you! The national Learning for Life and Exploring team is happy to announce the new Exploring Certification and Learning for Life School-Based Certification courses.

In the past, the Learning for Life and Exploring Certification course at CPD was one week long and open only to Learning for Life or Exploring executives. In 2014, the Exploring and Learning for Life School-Based certification courses will be offered as two separate courses taught simultaneously and open to all levels of staff. Both courses will offer pre- and post-course work as well as six hours of interactive class instruction.

We recognize that councils may not have a full understanding of exactly how to serve the needs of professionals or  volunteers with Exploring or Learning for Life responsibilities or how to start new programs. With increasing emphasis on character education and bullying from the Department of Education and on Exploring in councils, we recognize the need to address the issues in our training courses. With all levels of staff in mind, the course will focus on these topics, as well as growth plans, committees, and additional areas listed below.

Exploring

  • Fundraising in the name of Exploring
  • Career interest surveys
  • Middle school Explorer Clubs

Learning for Life School-Based

  • Understanding school budgets and calendars
  • National educational standard alignments
  • Anti-bullying and drug abuse prevention

All professionals are invited to add the Exploring Certification and Learning for Life School-Based Certification courses to their BSA career portfolios. In 2014, both courses will be offered on a limited basis and taught simultaneously. Those who are registered to attend the DOB classes on June 1-7 or October 5-11 can choose to add the six hours of either certification course to their DOB coursework during the time they are at CPD for no extra charge. We will also offer both courses at Philmont prior to the PM 1, 2, and 3 courses scheduled for April 22-25 for no extra charge. In addition, the national Learning for Life and Exploring team is offering stand-alone courses in late October.

Here’s a look at all the course dates and times:

April 21, 4-8 p.m. and April 22, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
At Philmont, the day before the PM series courses (open to all level professionals; space is limited)
