VETERINARIAN MEDICINE: AVIAN AND FISH

These sessions will introduce Explorers to veterinary medicine specialties that are less familiar to most people, including avian and fish medicine.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: ALLIED FIELDS

This session provides the participants with an introductory understanding of numerous fields of veterinary medicine beyond the traditional role of a veterinarian with direct animal contact.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: ANCILLARY SUPPORT SERVICES

**SAFETY NOTICE**
Before Explorers enter a working environment, review the hazards and risks faced in veterinary medicine; the precautions that are taken to prevent injury, illness, and disease transmission to caregivers and other animals; and the use of appropriate controls. Explorers should be provided appropriate training and personal protective equipment (PPE) before entering the working environment. Please consider whether they may need to be excluded from certain procedures, areas, or exams (e.g., X-rays or clinical laboratory procedures), and make appropriate safety accommodations. Due to the known hazards of ionizing radiation (X-rays), Explorers may not participate in the taking of radiographs. Trained laboratory technicians or their equivalent must be in immediate attendance whenever any clinical laboratory procedures are being carried out. This session provides participants with an introductory understanding of various ancillary diagnostic support fields that a veterinarian uses in providing animal health care. Radiology techniques, including x-ray and ultrasound, and clinical laboratory testing are just a few of the “tools” used by veterinarians to help diagnose and treat their patients that will be explored in this session.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: COMPANION ANIMAL INTRODUCTION

This session provides participants with an introductory understanding of the companion animal veterinarian.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: COMPANION ANIMAL SURGERY

This session provides participants with a continuation of the surgical skills learned in part 1 of the Companion Animal Medicine session.

TRACE EVIDENCE

This session provides participants with an understanding of trace evidence and how it is used to connect people, places, and things in a criminal investigation.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: TECHNICIAN (RVT, AHT)

This session provides participants with an understanding of veterinary technicians and their role in supporting veterinarians in all career fields in providing service of medical/surgical care to animals. The veterinary technician is the “nurse” of veterinary medicine.

PATHOLOGY

This session provides participants with an understanding of pathology and how it fits into the overall health care profession.

VETERINARY MEDICINE: EQUINE

**SAFETY NOTICE**
Safety concerns are a greater issue when working around large animals such as horses (equine) than when handling companion animals. Serious injuries and even death may result. Though the use of patient restraint (physical, chemical, or both) is a paramount tool for the safety and welfare of both the animal and those working around the animal, it is still easy to be kicked, bitten, struck by the animal’s head, or even run over and trampled by an animal that is bigger, stronger, and heavier than a human. Post Advisors and leaders must stress to participants the importance of being aware of the animal’s body language and always following the instructions of whomever is in charge of the animal. This session provides the participants with an introductory understanding of the field of equine veterinary medicine. Participants may have the opportunity to interact with various different breeds and species of equine and learn about the different uses of these animals.

COMPUTER SCIENCE CAREER CHALLENGE

This session introduces Explorers to the wide array of computer science jobs, programming languages and education requirements through a web-based Jeopardy-style game format.
